You may have heard that the San Francisco Police Department has discovered a nest of rascist, sexist, homophobic officers within its ranks. Well, calls for the firing squad were premature according to the Thin Blue Line (Dedicated to Fallen Officers On & Off duty for their Courage & Honor). Parody, a normal and healthy outlet for the men in blue, was mistaken for truth.

San Francisco Police Dept: Lighten Up!

Last week, a series of amateur videos made by officers of the San Francisco Police Department made it into the public arena. The official reaction was one of outrage. Officers were depicted ignoring calls in favor of reading magazines, doing Tai Chi routines, and visiting massage parlors. Entire squads of plain clothes officers scrambled to arrest an individual holding a microscopic chunk of crack. An area commander drooled over some Charlie’s Angels pretenders, and a traffic cop kept mirrors inside his ticket book so as not to forget what a great looking guy he was. “Racist, sexist, and homophobic” were the words used by the chief of police and other city officials to describe what they saw.

I don’t know any of the officers that participated in the making of those parodies (and too many people seem to be missing the point that they were parodies, intended for a station Christmas party), but my bet is that any one of them would wade into a crowd of drunk, out-of-control assailants, and not even consider if the person under assault was a member of an ethnic minority, homosexual, or someone that they just didn’t like. They might not feel too bad when one of their regular clients goes on to the Long Dirt Nap, but they’ll do everything they can to keep it from happening on their watch. If you decide to pin on the badge, you give up the right to decide who gets your protection and who doesn’t.

I have quite a collection of lawyer jokes. Most of them are based on the assumption that lawyers are dishonest, self-serving, greedy parasites that are in the game only for themselves. The majority of these were told to me by lawyers. Should I assume from this that the stereotype is true, since the lawyers (mostly) think these are funny? [Empasis supplied] Why is it that cops can’t poke fun at themselves and be given the same consideration?

One of the San Francisco news services offered a blog-type feedback service for comments on the SFPD video story. The majority of the comments there indicated that people thought the videos were funny, that no harm was intended or done, and that the SFPD should catch a clue and get back to work on important things. I agree. If SFPD has officers that are truly racist, sexist, and/or homophobic, it will come out in the quality of the work that they do. The jokes that they tell, or the onesthat they laugh at, don’t mean a thing. And if the police managers who saw those videos didn’t snicker at least once or twice, then it’s long past time for them to retire.

Lighten up.
